Referral to a Specialist

While evaluating your condition, your Wilce Student Health Center provider may determine that you should see a specialist for additional testing and/or evaluation.  This may be to a specialist on staff here at the Wilce Student Health Center or it may be to someone else.

Inbound Referrals

If your provider refers you to one of our specialty providers on staff, he/she will generate an inbound referral.  You will then be directed to stop by Advice/Appointments to schedule your appointment.

Outbound Referrals

Non-Urgent

If your provider refers you to a specialist outside of the Wilce Student Health Center, you will be asked to:

  • Sign an acknowledgement form
  • Complete the Referral Scheduling Form
  • Provide a copy (both front and back) of your insurance card
  • Provide a list of covered physicians (if required by your insurance)

This information will be given to our Referral Coordinator.  The Coordinator will contact you within 2-3 business days with information regarding your appointment.

Urgent (needs to be seen within 48hrs)

If your provider designates a referral as urgent you will be asked to:

  • Sign an acknowledgement form
  • Check in at the 2nd floor front desk
  • Provide a copy (both front and back) of your insurance card
  • Provide a list of covered physicians (if required by your insurance)
  • Meet with the Referral Coordinator who will schedule the appointment with the specialist (approximately 15-30 minutes)

Self-Referral

You may determine that you should see a specialist.  If this is the case, you will be responsible for contacting the specialist and making your own appointment.  Some insurance plans and/or specialists; however, require a referral from another physician. You may obtain a referral from your own physician or by scheduling an appointment with one of our providers.

Your Responsibilities

  • Ensure each service and provider is covered by your insurance plan before an appointment is made.
  • Pay all charges not covered by health insurance.
  • Contact the specialist to reschedule/cancel an appointment at least 24 hours prior to the appointment.
