Emergency Contraceptive Pills

Emergency contraception helps prevent pregnancy after unprotected intercourse or after the failure of a regular method of birth control.  It may be effective up to 5 days (120 hours) after unprotected sex, although effectiveness decreases the longer you wait.

Plan B One-Step (a single pill) and Next Choice (2 pills) are available without a prescription at any pharmacy, including the Student Health Center Pharmacy, if you are 17 years of age or older.  It can be purchased by both males and females.  Proof of age is required.  ella, a newly FDA approved emergency contraception, requires a prescription.

Counseling and a prescription are available by making an appointment to speak with a provder at the Student Health Center.  If you have Student Health Insurance (either the Comprehensive Plan or the WilceCare Supplement), the prescription will cost $10.00 at the Student Health Center pharmacy and the clinic visit is covered.  If you do not have SHI, you may want to check with your insurance carrier about prescription coverage for emergency contraception.  The cost of the visit can be billed to your insurance.  (Make sure you have registered your insurance information with Patient Registration on the first floor of the Student Health Center.)

Additional information about emergency contraception is available at The Emergency Contraception Website.
