What is a Registered Dietitian?
Registered Dietitians (RD) are health care professionals with training as food and nutrition experts.  RDs can provide sound medical advice to help you meet your health goals.  Requirements to become a RD include: minimum of a bachelor degree, completion of an accredited supervised practice program, pass a national examination, and completion of continuing professional education requirements.  For more information see the American Dietetic Association.

What is the difference between a Licensed Dietitian and a Registered Dietitian?
In Ohio, the term dietitian can only be used by an individual that holds a license to practice dietetics, a Licensed Dietitian (LD).  Ohio requires LDs to also be registered through the Commission of Dietetic Registration, a Registered Dietitian (RD).

What is the difference between a nutritionist and a dietitian?
These terms are often used interchangeably.  However, the term nutritionist is not a professionally regulated term.  Ohio law requires any person practicing any form of dietetics to be licensed.  Many individuals may describe themselves as a nutritionist, but do not necessarily hold specific academic training or experience.  Ohio law requires dietitians to be licensed and to have the specific criteria needed to be a Registered Dietitian (RD).
